Back to 2004 Diary

Born in Trinidad, Patricia Saunders has been living and working in the U.S. for most of her life.

My research areas include Caribbean nationalism, Jamaican Popular Culture, National Identity and Sexuality in Caribbean Culture. My first book, "Alien-Nation and Repatriation: Translating Identity in Anglophone Caribbean Literature" was published in 2007 and examines questions of migration, gender and national identity in Anglophone Caribbean literature. My current project focuses on Jamaican Popular Culture in the age of globalization.

I am currently directing the Caribbean Literary and Cultural Studies Program at the University of Miami -- we recently hosted the Global Caribbean: Interrogating the Politics of Location Symposium in partnership with the Creative Caribbean Network and the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami.
